Denver Water
Denver Water is a local government utility company supplying water to the City and
County of Denver and nearly 50% of Denver Water customers who live in the surrounding
suburbs.
Our most recent project involved developing a TM1 based Project Budgeting and Estimating
system for the Engineering division of Denver Water. This system captures labor,
expense, design, administration and construction estimates for 400+ capital projects
that range from several months to 10+ years in duration.
Denver Water is a long-standing customer in which we have successfully implemented
a number of projects, including:

Financial Planning
At Denver Water, we rearchitected financial planning application built around Microsoft
Excel and Cognos TM1 to streamline the budgeting and planning process for the Finance
division. This system captures budget information from all divisions within the
company and consolidates this information for reporting to the water board. With
this system, they were able to analyze their actual expenditures, compare against
budget and forecast, as well as run multiple planning scenarios to determine the
optimum monthly liquidity and to make quick decisions based on real time information.
Engineering Project Planning
The Engineering Project Planning project expanded the financial planning system
to the Engineering division of Denver Water. The Capital Project Budgeting System
incorporated Microsoft InfoPath and SharePoint Services 2003 to deliver a solution
that would enable Denver Water to push down accountability further into the organization,
streamline business processes, and facilitate communication across multiple divisions.
This new process, which allows managers and other responsible parties to develop
and input their own budget estimates using Microsoft InfoPath, has resulted in heightened
awareness and accountability. The long-range and annual planning processes have
been consolidated, drastically reducing the time requirement for plan development
and allowing more time for analysis and decision making. Improvements in collaborative
communication via InfoPath and SharePoint have improved forecasting and cash management
capabilities. Engineers now have a clear picture of the financial implications of
their decisions while Finance better understands the impact of financial decisions
on Engineering processes.
SharePoint Portal Integration
In this latest project, the engineering dashboard previously developed in SharePoint
Services 2003 was re-architected for MOSS 2007. Custom SharePoint master pages were
built, specifically for the Engineering department, along with a specialized service
to automatically refresh SharePoint list information from external web service applications.
This enables users to manage the information they desire by using native SharePoint
functionality, thereby reducing the need for support from IT. This has allowed Denver
Water to focus their internal resources on mission critical issues rather than departmental
support.
